WIAAIDD signs on as a sponsor for a bill to rid Wisconsin law
of the term "Mentally Retarded"
Rep.
Severson – Assembly District 28 (Burnett/Polk county area) is
introducing a bill which would remove the offensive terms “mental
retardation” and “mentally retarded” from Wisconsin statutes. These
terms would be replaced with the words “intellectual disability”.
Last year the federal government passed similar legislation related
to federal law in a bill called Rosa’s Law. Several states have
followed suit. Many self-advocates believe that changing our
language is an important step toward eliminating discrimination
against people with intellectual disabilities.
